Rise and Shine,” they say. What does this even mean? If you’re not a morning person, then it’s likely that anyone who utters the words “rise and shine” to you, might end up with a black eye! So, is it really possible to hack your morning habits and enjoy a productive day?
I believe it is, and personally, I’ve found that by making some small but necessary changes to my morning habits, I have been able to enjoy a super productive day.
In the past whenever my alarm went off, I would hear myself groan and would literally feel my body recoil. All I wanted was some extra snooze time. Let’s face it, my bed was (and still is) my favourite place in the world. It’s warm, it’s cozy, it’s comfy and it’s safe. Safe from the stressful day ahead.
So how did I turn myself into a “morning person” after being a night owl for so many years?
Go to Bed at a Reasonable Hour
Avoid trying to stay up late finishing work, catching up on emails or scrolling through your social media. Give yourself a set time for bed and stick with it each and every night. Switch off all electronics at least an hour before bedtime. Avoid taking your iPhone (iPad, laptop, kindle etc) to bed with you. This will help if you have a habit of checking your phone during the night.
Avoid Hitting Snooze
How many times do you hit the snooze button in the morning? When you do, how often do you wake up feeling well-rested and ready to face the day with open arms? I’ve never been one to hit the snooze button. I prefer to set my alarm for 15-20 minutes later and enjoy that extra time in deep slumber.
Stretch the Minute Your Feet Hit the Floor
Do you feel like you are so tight in the mornings that any thought of a workout first thing gives you chills? I’m not saying you need to jump straight into a yoga or workout session, but I’m suggesting that you use that space next to your bed to stretch and loosen up immediately upon crawling out of bed.
In the literal sense, upon awakening, perform a full body stretch (whilst still laying in bed). Then climb out of your bed and begin a basic stretching session (yes, right next to your bed, no excuses). I love to step immediately into downward facing dog. There is no need to set up a yoga mat or prepare for a visit to your yoga studio.
Savour a Healthy, Filling Breakfast
Breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day for so many reasons. By starting the day with a healthy breakfast, you will avoid the mid-morning cravings, you will also set yourself up for the day with an alert brain and a happy tummy. Ensure that your breakfast contains some healthy protein.
Do you sit down to a healthy breakfast each morning or are you running off to work with a breakfast bar in hand?
Enjoy Fresh Air and Sunshine
The first chance I get, I have the curtains open and I’m embracing the sunshine. If it’s not too cold, I will also open the door to our balcony to enjoy the full benefit of the sunshine and fresh air. This alone is enough to shake the cobwebs from my brain and prepare me for the day ahead.
I also like to walk to work (I’m lucky enough that I live only a 15-minute walk away). The sunshine, fresh air and the chance to stretch my legs sets me up for an amazing day.
At the end of my shift, I like to step it up a bit and enjoy a gentle jog home. Nothing too elaborate as high-intensity exercise messes with my sleep at night.
So, how will you hack your morning habits and what changes are you willing to make to ensure a successful and productive day?
